Tucked in a dark corner behind the columns of Statuary Hall, the House’s Ladies’ Reception Room provided a place for women to meet with their elected Representatives. Constituents seeking widows’ pensions, employment, and redress of government wrongs were frequent visitors to the Capitol. After sending a card in to a Member on the floor of the House, she might wait in the Reception Room for a response, or in the case of several of the women in this print, a meeting with the Congressman.
