In what amounted to an obituary, Harper’s Weekly eulogized former Tennessee Congressman Aaron Brown on the occasion of his death in 1859. Brown was active in many parts of the political arena, having served in the state House and Senate before being elected to Congress in the 1830s. After a term as governor, Brown ultimately returned to Washington as Postmaster General. Illustrated news journals were often a hodgepodge of information. The image of Brown is on the page’s upper left, and elsewhere the newspaper printed a scene in Argentina and sculpture of Eve.
