This image of Representative John Hickman was published in Harper’s Weekly in 1860, just three years after the journal launched. The magazine initially struggled to enliven its pages every week, and profiling a Congressman was one avenue to accomplish this. In this case, the image was apparently taken from a daguerreotype with a curved top border. The accompanying article touted Hickman’s honesty, courage, and vigorous participation in Pennsylvania politics.
