This letter, the House's oldest artifact documenting the Congressional Baseball Game, invited a local businessman to attend the June 1912 contest, which benefitted local playgrounds. Congressman (and second baseman) Nicholas Longworth feared that the Republicans would not be able to field a team that year: “Our big sticks are all gone, and the Democrats have them now.” A G.O.P. team was fielded but lost the match, 21-20.
