In the early 19th century, the West Front of the Capitol was untroubled by an urban environment, and this print reinforces the pastoral setting with dogs and children frolicking on the hillside below it. The windows and balconies of the Capitol looked over a relatively unpopulated city and the wooded forest that would become the National Mall.
