The proposed expansion of the Capitol illustrated here was a project of such scope that it would require moving the roads surrounding the building to accommodate the construction of new wings. The plan, submitted by Benjamin French, the Commissioner of Public Buildings, shows how several roads would be cut off— including New Jersey Avenue and North and South Capitol Streets—in order to accommodate the planned growth of the building.
