A newspaper editor and labor leader, Representative Victor Berger of Wisconsin had a brief but memorable legislative career. As this button indicates, he was the first Socialist Party Representative. With the benefit of a fresh political perspective, Berger in his first term introduced a bill to abolish the United States Senate, stating that it had “become an obstructive and useless body, a menace to the liberties of the people, and an obstacle to social growth.”
