George Perine’s portrait engraving of Charles Hamilton was published in William H. Barnes’ 1870 The Fortieth Congress of the United States. The New York–based engraver created similar portraits for most of the Members and Senators serving at the time. Each portrait was accompanied by a biography, and in Hamilton’s, the reader learned that the Pennsylvanian found his way to Florida—where his congressional district was located—as a Reconstruction Bureau Officer. He was the first Member elected to Congress from the “rehabilitated State of Florida” in 1868.
