This image of John De Witt Warner was part of Harper’s Weekly’s series of profiles of important Members of Congress. Shortly after this profile was published, Warner returned to his law practice and philanthropic activities. He became known as a distinguished statesman, attorney, classics scholar, and patron of the arts. In this print, artist George Breck shows the congressman resting his ample bulk in one of the chairs commonly used by Members.
