Daughter of former Member and three-time presidential candidate William Jennings Bryan, Ruth Bryan Owen was elected to the House in 1928. Known for her strenuous campaigning and devotion to her Florida constituents, Owen was the first woman appointed to the Foreign Affairs Committee.
