This print of William Newell combines elements of two popular types of campaign material. The image of Newell is similar to a carte-de-visite, a cardboard-mounted photograph in the format of a calling card that was all the rage in the 1860s. This version, however, is printed on paper, like posters that announced a candidate's name and office, which this print does, too. The combination made it cheaper than a photograph, yet easy to distribute widely.
