Henry González looms as a giant figure in the history of Hispanic Americans in Congress. His 37 years in the House make him the longest-serving Hispanic Member of Congress. Under González’s leadership, the Banking and Currency Committee in 1991 oversaw restructuing of the federal deposit insurance system, while resisting an effort to loosen restrictions on commercial ownership of banks. He also used his position to make the Federal Reserve System more publicly accountable.
