Object Details

This English publication focused on the vast multitude attending James Buchanan’s 1857 inauguration. A dense crowd is shown gathered at the East Front of the under-construction Capitol and the accompanying article speculates that “Washington was probably never before visited by so large a number of persons,” and that the “streets and avenues began to fill with a busy crowd of citizens as well as thousands . . . who for the previous days had poured towards the national metropolis in an uninterrupted stream.”
