In this example of the many news illustrations documenting the disputed 1876 presidential election, Democrats in the House protest the recount of the Louisiana electoral votes. Louisiana was one of three Southern states with questionable returns. Allegations of fraud and voter intimidation—as well as improper authorization of the electoral returns—were the basis of the Electoral Commission’s revisiting the state’s results.
