The four images on this page illustrate the drama of the impeachment of William Belknap, President Grant’s recently resigned Secretary of War. Although Belknap had served with distinction during the Civil War, an investigation launched by Heister Clymer, pictured at lower left, revealed his involvement with illegal arms sales to France and bribes he accepted in exchange for a War Department appointment. The top image shows impeachment proceedings in the House, which commenced just after Belknap’s evidently tearful resignation, shown in the bottom center image, from Grant’s cabinet.
