The expansion of the Capitol building was of great public interest in the 1850s, and progress on the building was a frequent subject in the news. Here, the early stages of work are shown, with stone masons at work in the foreground. The basic shape of the new wings is barely evident, but the scope of the project is indicated by the numerous workers and temporary structures.
