The 1881 electoral vote count was the subject of this image from the German version of Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper. James A. Garfield won this presidential election, which, though close, was a much smoother process than the 1876 election, for which electoral return irregularities caused considerable controversy. Here, though, the full Chamber—replete with young Pages and spectators in the galleries—witnessed a placid count.
