In 1894, Harper’s Weekly undertook to publish biographies of leading Members of Congress. That May, they profiled Robert Hitts, elected to Congress just four years earlier. Hitt came to the House from what the article called a “varied, picturesque, clever, and useful career” as Assistant Secretary of State.
