Joseph Byrns Jr., son and namesake of former Speaker Byrns, admires his father’s portrait on his first day of work as a new Member of the House. The younger Byrns was elected in 1938, just two years after his father’s death in office, and he served only one term. He returned to law after leaving Congress and served in the Army during World War II.
