In this painting, the artist has tipped the desk’s top forward toward the picture plane to give the viewer a better glimpse of objects Appropriations Committee Chairman Jerry Lewis chose to include. The bronze bear alludes to the California state flag, with its image of a grizzly bear. The white book, atop an unidentified red volume, is Gracian’s Manual, a compilation of maxims composed in the 1600s by the Spanish Jesuit and writer Baltasar Gracian.
