Speaker of the House Joseph Byrns, who served in Congress for almost 30 years, bid farewell to colleagues as the closing gavel fell on the first session of the 74th Congress. The group included: Representatives Stephen Young; Lister Hill; Robert Secrest; William Schulte; Speaker Byrns; John O’Connor; Majority Whip Patrick Boland; and Charles Plumley. Byrns, who served in the House for 27 years, died unexpectedly the following summer.
