Congressman Gus Hawkins checked out a prototype Apollo spacesuit with constituents and a staffer, in this 1960s photograph. It was no coincidence that he had a child with him. Hawkins spent much of his nearly 30-year House career securing equal educational opportunities for impoverished Americans. His legislative achievements included establishing a federal agency to prevent discrimination in the workplace and passage of the School Improvement Act.
