Object Details

Representative Virginia Jenckes is applauded following a speech at a Bonus Expeditionary Army camp, in which she advocated for early payment of money promised to veterans of World War I. The certificates were originally to be paid in 1945, but as the Great Depression worsened, many impoverished veterans demanded early payment. Congress ultimately voted to authorize the bonus payments in 1936.
