An intricate lattice of steel beams was constructed at the end of 1940 to reinforce the ceiling of the House Chamber in preparation for repairs to the roof of the Capitol Building. The beams remained in place until late 1949 when the first phase of extensive repairs and renovations to the Chamber were completed. The project marked the first major renovation to the Chamber in more than 90 years.
