In this print published five days before the inauguration, Senator Ben Wade read the election results to the joint convention of the House and Senate, announcing the victory of Ulysses S. Grant in the presidential election. With the election of the Vice President, Schuyler Colfax, the House was losing its Speaker. While all seems orderly in this image, reports discussed Senator Wade’s inability to keep the unruly chamber in order during the vote counts.
