Object Details

The “Silver Question” was debated over the course of several years in Congress, and was avidly followed by the illustrated weeklies. The Sherman Silver Act of 1890 was under scrutiny, with such debaters as Michael Harter and Thomas Reed opposing the populist-supported idea of “free silver.” Such montages of vignettes were a frequent device used in newspapers to present an informal take on the prominent events in Congress.
