John Nance Garner was sworn in as Speaker of the House—a position he held for a single Congress—on December 7, 1931. After receiving the oath from Representative-Elect Edward Pou, Garner administered the oath to the 432 Members in the Chamber. During the 72nd Congress, the Democrats were in charge of the House for the first time since World War I.
