The portrait of James Oberstar eschews symbols of his chairmanship of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee in favor of a simple composition. Oberstar sits on the edge of his chair, turned toward the viewer. He leans slightly forward, smiling, as if engaged in conversation. A shaded taupe background does not indicate a specific location, but denizens of Congress might recognize the chair as standard-issue House furniture, found in many of the Capitol’s offices.
