Object Details

In this print, the House’s impeachment managers entered the Senate Chamber to present their case against President Andrew Johnson, whom the House had voted to impeach in February of 1868. Thaddeus Stevens, walking with a cane at the center of the composition, was the de facto Republican floor leader at the time and led the impeachment effort. A portrait of Abraham Lincoln, whose assassination led to Johnson’s elevation to the presidency, hangs on the wall behind the procession to the Chamber.
