Newly elected Speaker Sam Rayburn greeted the two newest women in the House—Iris Blitch and Edith Green—the day before Congress opened in 1955. The 84th Congress' boasted 17 women—at that point, the most women to serve simultaneously—including Gracie Pfost, who stands between the freshmen and Rayburn.
