Like many portraits in the House Collection, this example assembles tokens of the subject’s life in Congress. A Shenandoah Valley farm appears in a painting behind Agriculture Committee Chairman and Virginia native Robert Goodlatte. The robin’s-egg blue walls and curtains were a color often used in the the committee's room decorations. The marble-topped table is from an adjacent meeting room, passed down from chairman to chairman for many years. Finally, the photograph of the subject’s wife, Maryellen, is based on one from Goodlatte’s office.
