Abbott Lawrence of Massachusetts served first as an Anti-Jacksonian and then as a Whig in the 24th and 26th Congresses. This print is based on a portrait painted by Alonzo Chappel, which in turn was based on a formal photograph of Lawrence, who died some years earlier. The Boston waterfront, where Lawrence made his fortune as a merchant and importer, is visible through the window behind him.
