Harper’s Weekly devoted an entire cover to showing its readers the lofty perch where reporters observed House proceedings. The press gallery, above the Speaker’s rostrum in the House Chamber, was crowded in the years after the Civil War. Correspondents were a well-known group, and some of the men in this print were portraits of prominent reporters.
