Joe Martin spent 42 years in the House including four as Speaker. He also served as Minority Leader for eight Congresses until he was displaced because of his advancing age. Despite feeling “like Caesar must have when Brutus stabbed him,” Martin remained in the House for another seven years, until he lost his re-election bid in 1966.
