The secession of the southern states was the dominant news of early 1861, and Harper’s Weekly regularly featured portrait montages of the congressional delegations of states leaving the Union. These portraits, all engraved after photographs by Mathew Brady, were accompanied by critical biographies of each legislator on the following pages.
