The newly unveiled monument to assassinated president James A. Garfield is shown in its place at the foot of the Capitol grounds in this 1887 hand-colored wood engraving. The monument is composed of an over life-sized portrait sculpture of Garfield by artist John Quincy Adams Ward, with three allegorical figures beneath—Student, Warrior and Statesman—symbolizing his work as teacher, soldier, and elected official.
