This hand-colored wood engraving was cut from an unknown book and dates from 1842. It closely resembles one of William Bartlett’s illustrations of the Capitol from the book entitled American Scenery (1840). The grand staircase leads the viewer’s eye to the wood and copper dome designed by Charles Bulfinch, which was one of the remarkable features of the Capitol at the time.
