On 9 January 1872, distinguished author and rabbi Abraham De Sola led the opening prayer in the House of Representatives, becoming the first British subject to do so. De Sola told reporters that “friends of civil and religious liberty” had arranged his appearance. The scene is shown from an unusual perspective, from behind the Speaker’s rostrum, looking out onto the crowded Chamber, with the Members present respectfully bowing their heads.
