Joe Martin spent 20 years in the House’s leadership as both Minority Leader and Speaker. This portrait was made to mark his service in the former post, and it was hung in the House in 1975. It was likely painted by Irving Resnikoff. One of the most prolific painters in the House Collection, Irving Resnikoff’s signature is not found on a single portrait. He worked for the entrepreneur Leo Fox, who signed the paintings with a pseudonym.
