The National Federation of Republican Women decided in 1954 to commission sculptor Suzanne Silvercruys to make a bust of former Speaker Joseph Martin in honor of his service to the House. When the bust was unveiled in 1962, Martin joined Speaker Joseph Cannon in the distinction of having had a portrait sculpture on display while still in office. The format of the work is unusual, because it includes arms and a gavel, rather than the traditional head-and-shoulders bust.
