Charles Gray received the commission to complete Speaker Warren Keifer’s portrait in 1912. Gray was known as both a portrait artist and as the art director of the Chicago Herald and Chicago Tribune. In addition to the Keifer portrait, Gray painted Speaker Michael Kerr’s portrait for the House of Representatives.
