The Massachusetts State Legislature donated the Robert Winthrop portrait to the House of Representatives in 1882. Daniel Huntington, among the most successful American painters of the late 19th century, was commissioned to paint the portrait during Winthrop’s lifetime, but well after his service as Speaker. The pose of the three-quarter length portrait— Winthrop looking thoughtfully to one side, with a sheaf of papers in one hand, as if he is preparing to address an audience—alludes to Winthrop’s reputation as an exceptional orator.
