Commissioned in 1911 to replace the portrait on paper by Louis Wieser, Speaker John W. Jones’s portrait was completed by James Sword. A prolific landscape and portrait artist who had achieved popular success by the late nineteenth century, Sword was educated at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, and was influenced by the Hudson River School style. His work was regarded as reflecting popular taste, and often included touches of quiet sentiment.
