Richard Norris Brooke, who also painted the House’s portrait of Representative and Supreme Court Justice John Marshall, received the 1911 commission for the Hunter portrait. Elected to the post at age 30, Hunter is the youngest person to serve as Speaker. The portrait appears to be based on a variety of images, and the result shows an older man than Hunter was at the time of his Speakership.
