An Electoral Commission was formed in January 1877 to settle the disputed Presidential election of 1876. In this print, the Return Board of Louisiana—one of the four states with problematic election returns—appears before the commission as it meets in the House Chamber. The packed galleries are indicative of the interest in the commission’s decision.
