Before the artist painted the subject for the House Committee on Indian Affairs, it appeared as a book illustration. Based on sketches he made in the 1840s while stationed at Fort Snelling, Minnesota, Seth Eastman illustrates Chippewa women gathering wild rice in traditional birch bark canoes.
