The rostra of both the old House and Senate Chambers are detailed in this news illustration from the opening of the second session of the 32nd Congress. The Speaker’s rostrum in the old House Chamber was a rounded, tiered platform, surmounted by luxurious drapery, which served both as decoration and as a sound-absorbing material in the often noisy Chamber.
