In 1862, the celebration of George Washington’s birthday in the Capitol included the display of captured Confederate flags in the old House Chamber, illustrated here. The illustration shows “a dense crowd of well-dressed ladies and men,” who also attended the reading of Washington’s farewell address in the House Chamber.
