The New York Fire Zouaves came to Washington shortly after the unit was recruited at the start of the Civil War, and they were quartered in the House Chamber and throughout the Capitol. A Zouave regiment was distinguished by unique formations inspired by the French army in North Africa and sometimes by colorful uniforms, including baggy pants and short, open-fronted jackets. This unit—shown in regular United States military attire—fought in the first Battle of Bull Run not long after this print was published.
