After the Civil War, Washington, D.C.’s, development into a grand city picked up speed, as documented in this 1873 wood engraving from Picturesque America, a publication of remarkable features of the United States. In addition to the central image of the Capitol, the District now included the Smithsonian Castle, the White House and Executive Office Building, and the formidable edifices of the Treasury and Agriculture Departments.
